12th Eight-thousander for Edurne Pasaban

(20.05.2009)

On 18th May, Edurne Pasaban from the Ferrino Technical Team summited Kangchenjunga, her 12th Eight-thousander. Ferrino celebrates this great success together with the Basque climber.

18 May, 4.45 p.m.: Edurne Pasaban is at 8586 m, on the summit of Kangchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain and her 12th Eight-thousander. A women’s record that Pasaban has given her all to achieve. Hers is doubtless an important success and as such, it has been celebrated throughout Spain.

It wasn’t easy for Edurne to reach the peak of Kangchenjunga. Right up to the very last metre, high winds obstructed her climb and that of her companions from Al Filo de lo Imposible: Juanito Oiarzabal, Asier Izguirre and Alex Chicon, who summited with her. And the descent to the 7400 metres of Camp 4 – from where the climbers set out some 24 hours beforehand – was just as hard, as was getting back to Base Camp.

The ascent of Kangchenjunga was a gruelling test for Pasaban, who has once again demonstrated all of her fierce endurance and skill. Now, the only peaks Edurne Pasaban needs to complete her goal of all 14 Eight-thousanders are Annapurna and Shisha Pangma.

As yet, no woman has succeeded in accomplishing this feat; it is a journey that Edurne shares with two other formidable woman climbers: Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, who summited her 12th Eight-thousander, Lhotse, just a short time after Edurne’s summit and Nives Meroi, who had to call off her attempt on Kangchenjunga, remaining at 11 Eight-thousanders.

However their journey ends, Ferrino celebrates the courage of Edurne Pasaban and of all women who are showing that no goal is impossible, even on the world’s highest peaks.
